7/27/2011 Final Plan Approved!
All the work that went into crafting the Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan has paid off. The members of the VIA Board of Trustees formally adopted the plan (link to the plan) at their regularly scheduled meeting held July 26, 2011, approving it as a guide for future transit development in San Antonio.

Now that the Long Range Plan has been approved and adopted as a guiding document for VIA, a public roll-out of the plan is tentatively scheduled for late summer or early fall.

Adopted Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan - Executive Summary
12/27/2010 Winter 2011 open houses set. Be a part of the progress.
VIA is having open houses in January and February to share progress on the plan and to get additional input from the community. Come get a sneak peek of our plan to use innovations like bus rapid transit, light rail and modern streetcars.
12/22/2010 Grant awarded to VIA for urban circulator project .
The Federal Transit Administration has awarded a grant to VIA Metropolitan Transit to begin an alternatives analysis for the agency’s proposed Downtown High-Capacity Urban Circulator System.
The alternatives analysis will look at ways to provide improved mobility and circulation between center city neighborhoods and the central business district. The project focuses on two urban corridors that align north-south (from Southtown to the Pearl Brewery area) and east-west (from the near East Side to the near West Side through downtown).
In order to advance a proposed urban circulator rail alternative through the federal Small Starts process, it is necessary for VIA to perform an alternatives analysis on each of the proposed corridors. VIA was awarded a total of $900,000 to help fund the alternatives analyses.

11/30/2010 - Modern Streetcar Feasability Study now available.
The Inner-City Rail Streetcar Feasibility Study was conducted by VIA Metropolitan Transit in collaboration with the Downtown Alliance of San Antonio. This Feasibility Report presents the recommendations developed by the Technical Advisory Committee as a result of their analysis from July to October, 2009, as well as directions adopted by the Commission on Intra-City Rail and Streetcar.
6/01/2010 - June workshops will seek input on alignments and modes
VIA has scheduled several public workshops in June to allow further public input on this visionary plan before it is finished this fall. At these workshops we will provide an update on the project and seek input on study alignment and mode options. Basically we will have community discussion regarding which type of transit service best meets the future needs along certain streets. This is an important opportunity for both the public and VIA so please try to come. Workshop details.
1/29/2010 - Upcoming meetings to be announced soon
Since the initial round of VIA SmartWay SA community workshops this past fall – the phase one community involvement component - VIA has gathered information from the public for the Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Planning process and began studying more than 25 corridors within the San Antonio-Bexar County area. We have conducted research on transit systems across the United States that serve the public with a variety of transit modes, including commuter rail, light rail, streetcar, bus rapid transit, high occupancy vehicle lanes and local bus service and other transit improvements including transit centers and park and rides. Analyzing the way other cities utilize multimodal services, VIA is able to study which modes work best in other major cities and regions, while examining the current and future transportation needs of the greater San Antonio-Bexar County region.
VIA is in the process of planning the next phase of public involvement which will likely start in late March 2010. These meetings will offer the community another opportunity to contribute to the Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan before it is drafted this summer. Please stay tuned for an announcement soon regarding the details of these meetings.
10/23/09 - Series of community meetings set to get more input
Getting input from the community is critical to the success of SmartWaySA. Kickoff community meetings were held at Sunset Station this summer to hear what people had to say. A second set of meetings has now been planned to try to reach out to more poeple. If you could not come to Sunset Station, please come out to one of the meetings in November. If that is not possible, please complete this short online survey. Now is the time to help us plan VIA's next innovation.

9/9/09 SmartWaySA Kickoff Meetings and Workshops a Success
The SmartWay Kickoff events held at Sunset Station from August 31 to September 3 were designed to get initial feedback from the community as VIA develops a Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan. While the plan will take about a year to complete, it was important to start the process with a clean slate, open minds and a vision for our future. During the four days we were excited to have a mix of people provide that vision. Community leaders, planning professionals and finance experts sat at the table with bus riders, neighborhood activists and other concerned citizens. Together they provided critical input into where this plan should go and how it should be developed. We can only hope this tremendous involvement from the community continues until the plan is finally drafted next year.
